Save the historic schoolhouse
The Friends of the Carus Historic Schoolhouse is a local organization devoted to preserving and restoring our beloved "White Building" – a place of historical, architectural, and community significance.
Our mission is to not only save this building from demolition, but repurpose it as a gathering space for all in the community to enjoy!
Why was the schoolhouse under threat of demolition?
Carus Elementary had been in need of improved parking for years. With the passage of the bond in May 2020, the Canby School District finally had the funds to make those improvements. The decision was made to either sell the building to someone who could move it, or demolish it. The Friends of the Carus Historic Schoolhouse have been working tirelessly since fall of 2022 to ensure the building's safe relocation. Thanks to the support of the community, it was narrowly saved from demolition the summer of 2023. The 1926 Craftsman style two-room schoolhouse was fittingly moved to Evans Farms, whose lineage includes Clarance Evans, one of the original builders of the school.
What Can You Do?
To avoid the wrecking ball, we had to move the building prior to fully raising the funds to cover the costs. With the building safely relocated to its new home at Evans Farms, now begins the work of transforming this building into a community center for all to enjoy! Currently we are raising funds for a new foundation and to cover the cost of the initial move. Monetary donations, either via check or electronically through this website, would be greatly appreciated. And as renovations continue, donations of time, talent, materials, or labor will be invaluable.
Thank you for helping us save & restore this community landmark!
“A building is alive, like a man, and its spirit is the spirit of its maker.”
— Frank Lloyd Wright
